About me and my therapy practice
About Me
“They always say time changes things, but you actually have to change them yourself.” – Andy Warhol. This idea sits at the heart of my work as a counsellor. I support adults, young people (from age 14), and couples in Oxted, Caterham, and online, offering both short‑ and long‑term therapy tailored to individual needs.
I am trained in Humanistic and Person‑Centred counselling, an approach that places you at the centre of the process. My role is to offer a warm, non‑judgemental space where you can explore your feelings, understand yourself more fully, and develop healthier ways of coping. Many clients describe sessions as natural, open conversations that help them feel heard, supported, and able to make meaningful changes.
My interest in couples counselling grew from working with individuals who were struggling in their relationships. I wanted to help partners communicate more clearly, reconnect emotionally, and understand each other’s experiences. This led me to complete specialist training, allowing me to offer dedicated support to couples alongside my individual work.
I know reaching out can feel daunting, but counselling can be one of the most positive steps you take. Sessions can be in‑person or online, offering flexibility around busy lives while still providing a safe space to explore thoughts, feelings, and behaviours.
A recent client shared this feedback: “My first visit was nerve‑wracking, but Shan immediately put me at ease. Our sessions felt like conversations rather than counselling. There was no judgement, sometimes tears but often laughter. I’m now a much better person, and my family agree. It feels like Botox for the soul.”
I’m here to support you at your own pace as you move toward a life that feels more manageable and fulfilling.
Practice description
I bring over 17 years of counselling experience, supporting both young people and adults across a range of settings, including GP practices, private schools in the UK and abroad, and youth counselling agencies. Alongside my private practice, I am the Counselling Manager at Heads Together YMCA East Surrey, where I lead part of the NHS Children and Young People’s (CYPS) emotional wellbeing and mental health service in Surrey. This dual role allows me to work closely with diverse clients and stay connected to current developments in mental health care.
Throughout my career, I have supported clients with many presenting issues, including anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, family and relationship difficulties, bereavement, and loss in its many forms — whether through the end of a relationship, a significant life transition, or a change in identity. I have a particular interest in grief and loss work and hold specialist training with the Foundation for Infant Loss, which deepened my understanding of how profoundly loss can shape someone’s emotional world.
My approach is grounded in compassion, respect, and a belief in each person’s capacity for growth. I aim to offer a safe, steady space where clients can explore their experiences at their own pace, feel heard, and begin to make sense of what they are going through. Whether someone is navigating long-standing challenges or facing something new and unexpected, I work collaboratively to help them build confidence, resilience, and healthier ways of coping.
I am committed to ongoing professional development and regularly update my skills through training in areas such as eating disorders, suicide prevention, anxiety, self-harm, and bereavement. This continual learning ensures I offer informed, ethical, and effective support, and it reflects my dedication to providing high-quality care to every client I work with.
My first session
The initial appointment is an opportunity for us to meet and begin building a sense of ease and trust. It gives you space to talk about what has brought you to therapy and what you hope to gain from our work together. I will ask some background questions to help me understand your situation, but the session moves at your pace. Equally, it’s a chance for you to get a feel for how I work and decide whether I’m the right fit for you — feeling comfortable with your therapist is an important foundation for meaningful progress.
If you are attending as a couple, the first session allows both partners to share their perspectives and hopes for the relationship. We explore what isn’t working, what you would like to strengthen, and how we can approach the sessions in a way that feels balanced and supportive for you both.
During this appointment, we can also discuss practical arrangements such as preferred days and times for ongoing sessions. Therapy is not one‑size‑fits‑all; some people prefer short‑term work focused on a specific issue, while others benefit from longer‑term exploration. We will regularly review how things are going so the process remains helpful and aligned with your needs.
Life naturally brings stress, change, disappointment, and grief — experiences we often try to manage alone or with the support of friends and family. Speaking with a trained professional offers a confidential space to explore these feelings more deeply, gain insight, and find new ways to move forward. Many clients describe the first session as a relief: a moment to pause, breathe, and begin making sense of what they are carrying.
I’m very happy to answer any questions you may have before booking your first session, whether individually or as a couple. Reaching out can feel daunting, but it is often the first step toward feeling more supported, grounded, and understood.
