About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Simon.
You may have found your way here because something in life isn't sitting right anymore. You might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed, stuck in familiar patterns, struggling in relationships, or carrying a sense that you've lost touch with yourself. Sometimes there is a clear reason for seeking therapy. At other times, there is simply a feeling that something needs to change.
I have over 20 years of experience in Counselling within the NHS and charities and am a qualified level 6 Relational Counsellor. I'm also a senior Gestalt Psychotherapy Trainee in the final stages of qualifying.
I provide face to face Counselling and Psychotherapy from a peaceful room in central Abergavenny. I also am able to provide online sessions too.
Over the years I have gained a wide experience of supporting many people with a diverse range of issues. These have included: Trauma, Abuse, Depression, Anxiety, ADHD, Neurodiversity, Addiction, Self Harm, Relationships, Bereavement, PTSD, Stress , Gender, Sexuality, Grief and Loss.
I work with adults from all backgrounds and life experiences, and I am fully LGBTQIA+ affirming. There’s no “type” of person who comes to therapy, everyone brings something unique, and all experiences are welcome.
Practice description
As a therapist, I try to be straightforward, grounded, and fully present. I’m not here to fix you or give you a list of instructions. Instead, I’m here to work alongside you and help you explore what is happening in your life, both in the present and in the wider context of your experiences.
My approach is relational and rooted in Gestalt psychotherapy. I believe that the relationship we build in therapy is an important part of the work. It gives us a space to explore your experiences openly and to notice things that may be difficult to see or understand on your own.
We can take time to explore what is happening for you, at a pace that feels comfortable, and see what becomes clearer as we talk. This might involve looking at your thoughts, feelings, relationships, behaviours, or experiences that are difficult to put into words. There is no expectation that you need to have everything worked out before you come to therapy.
I don't believe therapy is about having someone tell you what you should do. Instead, I see it as a space where you can develop a deeper understanding of yourself and explore what you might want to change. Sometimes that may involve trying something different or looking at an experience from another perspective, but only where it feels useful and appropriate for you.
Clients have described me as calm and easy to talk to. I value honesty, warmth and openness, and I work at a pace that feels manageable rather than overwhelming. My aim is to offer a space where you can feel heard and understood, without judgement, and where we can work together to understand what is happening and what you might want from therapy.
My first session
Starting therapy can feel daunting, particularly if you haven't had therapy before. You don't need to know exactly what you want to talk about or have everything figured out before we meet.
The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know each other and for you to tell me what has brought you to therapy. We can talk about what is happening for you at the moment, what you would like help with, and what you hope might be different.
I'll also explain how I work and answer any questions you may have. There is no pressure to tell me everything straight away. We can take our time and see whether working together feels right for you.
