About me and my therapy practice

Based in central Brighton, I run my own private practice full-time and see clients in-person and online.

I work with a blend of psychotherapy and EMDR clients (age 16+), and I clinically supervise trainees and practitioners. My arena of work is trauma, PTSD/C-PTSD, stress, anxiety, relational attachment trauma, low self-esteem/confidence, shame narratives.

Practice description

I tend to find these 'explain yourself' introductions difficult to write as it's hard to encapsulate a relationship. Here's my attempt...

I hold a philosophy that each person has the capacity to change provided they are in a safe, authentic relationship with another. Part of my role is to bear witness to the stories a person tells themselves and of themselves. Our past influences our present and can shape our future, so understanding all 3 of those prongs of personhood allows us to get under the hood of what holds us back and what we most deeply desire for ourselves. The therapeutic relationship is key. I'm the 'kick and a stroke' type of therapist - meaning I'll support you through the dark times and challenge you when appropriate because we're here to do the hard work of therapy.

My flavour of therapy is humanistic, which is a philosophical lens on the experiences of humankind, and what it means to be a person. I draw heavily on Gestalt theory, person-centred but most dominantly from a trauma-informed lens. I work as an EMDR therapist which also informs how I view our creative adaptations to trauma and life.

My first session

Prior to a first session, we'd have a 15 minute initial consultation (no fee) via Zoom for us to have a temperature check, ensure I'm a good fit for you and that I can help. We'd then book an initial session.

Before your first session, I send you a few forms for completion to check current mood/anxiety levels, register your personal details etc which normally take about 15 minutes to complete (or we can complete in session if that's your preference).

Therapy sessions are 50 minutes and EMDR sessions are 60 minutes. The first EMDR session differs from therapy, as it's a 90 minute session.

In our first session, I ask a lot more questions than any other session. This is me getting to know more about your life, how you came to be you, who is important in your life and current goals. Sometimes, I ask a few questions and you may simply provide the information. I also use certain scales/forms to understand the impact of life events on your day-to-day life which I complete with you.

There isn't a set template for the first session, but I will want to get to know you. Thereafter, we'll define what you'd like from therapy (and how you'll know when you've got what you want) which forms the contract for our work together. At regular periods in our work, I'll check-in that you're getting what you need too. Therapy is a relationship and I want you to have the best possible experience.

Prospective clients often ask me about frequency of sessions and how to pay, so I thought it may be helpful to address here. I work weekly and sessions are invoiced in the third week of each month, with payment via Stripe or bank transfer. Occasionally, we may move to fortnightly once we've worked together long term yet this is something we would discuss.

If you're considering an EMDR Intensive with me, then we follow a similar format aside from the payment schedule. But this is something we'd discuss in our initial sessions.
