About me and my therapy practice

There are times when life can feel overwhelming, and you may not even be completely sure why. You might be struggling with anxiety, low mood, stress, relationships or self-esteem, or perhaps you simply feel stuck and know that something needs to change.

Whatever has brought you here, you don't need to have everything worked out before coming to counselling.

I offer a warm, down-to-earth and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what's happening in your life and how you're really feeling. We can take things at your pace, without pressure or expectation about what you "should" talk about.

I have a particular interest in men's mental health and understand that, for many men, talking about emotions or asking for help can feel difficult. Sometimes we've spent years learning to keep things to ourselves, carry on and appear as though everything is fine. Counselling can provide somewhere you don't have to do that.

Although men's mental health is an important part of my work, my practice is open to everyone. I work with men and women from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences, and the person sitting in front of me will always be more important than a label or diagnosis.

As an integrative counsellor, I don't believe one approach works for everybody. My work has a person-centred foundation, meaning our relationship and your individual experience are at the heart of therapy. Where helpful, I also draw upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis to help us explore thoughts, feelings, behaviours, relationships and patterns that may be affecting your life.

Most importantly, counselling is something we do together. My role isn't to judge you or tell you how to live your life, but to help you understand yourself more deeply and support you in finding a way forward that feels right for you.

Practice description

I offer counselling in a relaxed, confidential and welcoming setting, with face-to-face appointments available in Stockport Town Centre.

I understand that contacting a counsellor for the first time can feel daunting. You might have been thinking about counselling for a while, or something may have happened recently that has made you realise you'd like some support. Either way, there is no expectation that you need to know exactly what you want to say or where to begin.

I offer a free 15-minute initial conversation before you decide whether you'd like to book a session. This gives us a chance to have an informal chat, talk briefly about what has brought you to counselling and, importantly, see whether you feel comfortable working with me. You're also welcome to ask any questions about counselling or how I work.

Face-to-face sessions last 50 minutes and cost £60. I offer both short-term and longer-term counselling depending on what you need; there is no expectation that you commit to a set number of sessions.

My face-to-face practice is currently based at the Prudential Building in Stockport Town Centre, with appointments available on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings.

I am a Registered Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (MBACP) and work within the ƵEthical Framework.

My first session

Your first session is an opportunity for us to begin getting to know one another and for you to talk about what has brought you to counselling. There is no need to prepare anything beforehand, and you don't need to know exactly what you want to say.
We'll spend some time talking about what you would like from counselling and anything you feel it would be helpful for me to understand. I'll also explain how we will work together, including confidentiality, and you'll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions.
Some people find themselves talking quite easily in their first session, while others feel nervous or aren't sure where to begin. Both are completely normal. There is no expectation that you tell me everything straight away. Trust takes time, and we can work at a pace that feels right for you.
I'm not going to judge you, test you or expect you to say the “right” things. My job is to listen, understand your experience and help us begin making sense of whatever has brought you here.
By the end of the session, we can talk about how it felt and whether you would like us to continue working together.

Availability

I am currently accepting new clients. Face-to-face appointments are available in Stockport Town Centre (SK1) on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, with online appointments available on Monday evenings.

My new Hazel Grove (SK7) counselling room will also be opening shortly. Please feel free to contact me to discuss current availability or to arrange a free 15-minute introductory call.

About me and my therapy practice

Taking the first step towards counselling can feel daunting, particularly if you're used to coping with things on your own. You might be feeling anxious, overwhelmed or low, struggling with a relationship, questioning your confidence, or simply feeling that something in your life isn't quite right. You don't need to have everything worked out before coming to counselling.

I offer a warm, calm and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about whatever is happening for you, at a pace that feels comfortable. I believe that feeling genuinely heard and understood can be an important part of making sense of our experiences and beginning to see things differently.

Many of the people I work with appear to be coping well on the outside while privately feeling overwhelmed, exhausted or disconnected. You may spend much of your life looking after other people, keeping things together or telling yourself that you should be able to cope. Counselling gives you somewhere you don't have to do that.

As an integrative counsellor, I don't believe that one approach suits everyone. My work is grounded in Person-Centred Therapy, and I also draw upon Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Transactional Analysis. This allows us to explore not only what you're experiencing now, but also the thoughts, patterns and experiences that may be influencing how you feel.

Our work together isn't about me telling you what to do. It's about helping you understand yourself more fully, recognise patterns that may no longer be helping you, and find your own way forward.

Over time, counselling can help you develop greater self-awareness, understand your emotional responses, build confidence and find healthier ways of responding to the difficulties you face. The aim isn't to change who you are, but to help you feel more able to live in a way that feels right for you.

Whatever has brought you here, you will be met with warmth, respect and without judgement.

Practice description

Counselling with me is collaborative and led by what you need. You don't need to arrive knowing exactly what you want to talk about, and there is no pressure to share anything before you feel ready. We'll begin wherever feels right for you and work at a pace that feels comfortable.

I work with adults experiencing a range of difficulties, including anxiety, stress, low mood, low self-esteem, bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties and work-related pressures. I also have a particular interest in men's mental health and understand how difficult asking for help can sometimes feel when you've spent years believing you should simply cope.

Sessions last 50 minutes. I currently offer face-to-face counselling in Stockport Town Centre on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday evenings, alongside online counselling via Microsoft Teams. My new dedicated counselling room in Hazel Grove will be opening shortly.

Before beginning counselling, I offer a free 15-minute initial conversation. This gives us an opportunity to talk briefly about what has brought you to counselling, for you to ask any questions, and for us both to consider whether working together feels right.

There is no obligation to book afterwards. Finding a counsellor you feel comfortable with matters, and I believe it's important that you have the opportunity to make that choice for yourself.
