About me and my therapy practice
I'm Harry, a qualified Humanistic Integrative counsellor working with individuals and couples.
We may come to counselling for many reasons. We may be struggling with a particular issue, like grief, anxiety, or depression. We may feel stuck in life, without meaning or purpose. Our past experiences may be clouding our ability to move forward. Maybe the experiences we had in our childhood and our upbringing affect us in ways we can't seem to understand.
Perhaps we're hoping to learn more about ourselves and develop a sense of understanding, about why we are the way we are. Or maybe the reasons don't feel clear, but there's a feeling that something isn't quite right, or that something is missing.
Counselling with me means having a warm, safe, and non-judgemental space to explore what brings you to counselling, at your own pace. Our sessions will be collaborative, meaning we find a unique way of working together that best suits your individual needs.
As a Humanistic Integrative counsellor, I draw from several approaches to inform how I work. Drawing from the Humanistic approach, I believe that the utmost authority on your own life and experience is you. Your experiences and feelings are true and valid, even when the world around us can tell us the opposite. I will be alongside you, offering empathy and warmth, to support and gently encourage your own curiosity towards your process.
I am also guided by the works of Carl Jung and Analytic Psychology, which means we may gently draw our attention to unconscious processes in the mind and body, with the aim of bringing these into our awareness and coming closer to a sense of wholeness. I believe that we are shaped in no small part by our childhood experiences, so looking to the past can be challenging, but fulfilling.
We may also have questions about meaning and purpose in our lives, particularly if we don't feel a sense of direction or fulfilment. I welcome and encourage philosophical and spiritual enquiry in our sessions.
Practice description
From our sessions, and our collaborative relationship, we can develop your self-awareness to affect purposeful change. Therapy helps us to feel more connected to ourselves and our world around us. It can free us from our worries, troubles and regrets. Perhaps above all, therapy allows us to become more accepting of ourselves, more loving and forgiving.
I work in both short-term and long-term capacities, and the duration of our time together is decided by you, depending on what feels right and relevant. A warm, non-directive and confidential environment gives you the space to work through whatever feels important. I may ask gentle questions to encourage your curiosity, but the focus will always be on your own agenda.
Our sessions will usually be weekly, meaning we'll have the opportunity to work together regularly, finding a time in your week where we can pause all other activities, responsibilities and commitments, and focus on you. Self-care is important and necessary, our mental health is just as important as our physical health, so attending to our psychological needs should be given the importance it deserves.
Here are some of the issues I work with, and I encourage you to get in contact and book a consultation if you feel I may be able to help.
Anxiety, Depression, Stress, Grief and Loss, Trauma (past and present), Relationship Issues, Lack of meaning and purpose, Life Transitions, Identity, LGBTQIA+, Self Esteem.
I offer concessionary rates also, as I feel it's important that therapy is accessible for as many people as possible.
My first session
Before booking a first session, I offer a free 30-minute consultation call, which we can do on the phone or on video call. This is so we can get to know each other, and you can decide if you feel I will be able to help.
In our first session, we'll likely explore the reasons you're coming to therapy, what you'd like support with, and how the two of us will work together. We can explore how you're feeling about your issues, and how you're feeling about starting therapy.
I will also share and explain the practical side of things, like contracting and scheduling.
The first session may feel daunting or overwhelming, so I invite you to go at your own pace, there's no need to share everything at once. You can find your own rhythm in a safe, warm and non-judgemental environment, in which I will be listening carefully or asking gentle questions to encourage you along the way.
