I now practice at HumanKind Psychotherapy in London Fields, Hackney on a Friday afternoon (12:00 to 17:00).
I otherwise see people at Babel Studios in Borough (SE1 0AS) on a Thursday afternoon to evening, or at Caya Therapy in Peckham (SE15 4PU) on a Sunday afternoon. I also work with people online at other ad hoc availabilities.
About me and my therapy practice
Hello, and welcome to my page. If you are facing difficulties in life, I hope to be of therapeutic support. I am attentive to each person’s unique experience, including anxiety, loss, isolation, feeling misunderstood, or searching for something more. Through an empathic and analytical approach, I provide a space to explore what is going on, to come to new realisations, and to develop new ways of being and relating.
I work with people from diverse cultural and social backgrounds and with different identities and sexualities. I am curious about human beings and life itself, including its many difficulties. Without idealising suffering, I believe adversity can sometimes create opportunities for introspection and more resilient ways of being.
As an integrative counsellor, I draw on psychodynamic, existential, humanistic, trauma-informed and cognitive-behavioural perspectives. My therapeutic work builds on my career as an anthropologist. Anthropology brings a cross-cultural and experience-near perspective to understanding what it means to be a human being, including how our lives are shaped by family, culture and society.
I work part-time at the Centre for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action at SOAS, University of London, and at the University of Oxford, where I teach courses such as ‘What makes life meaningful? Perspectives from anthropology’. I hold a PhD for a thesis, 'Aspirations of university graduates: an ethnography in New York and Los Angeles'. I continue to publish from this research, which deeply informs my therapeutic practice.
Practice description
Much of my work is with couples and relationships. I work with people in partnership who are looking to address such issues as recurring conflict, communication difficulties, an incidence of infidelity, discrepant sexual desires, disagreements over parenting or in-laws, cultural differences, or a sense that a treasured connection is fading in its spark. I approach relational counselling as joint therapy: creating space to share inner lives and biographies in one another’s presence, fostering compassion, deeper connection, and healthier communication. If the prospect of separation is worth considering, I provide a safe space to work through such questions.
I also work one-to-one with people addressing various life concerns including anxiety, depression, life transitions, and existential questions around meaning, choice, mortality, authenticity, isolation and connection. I have particular experience working with young men around self-worth, sexuality, relationships and life purpose.
My first session
I offer a free initial 20-minute phone call. In relational counselling, this is a separate call with each person. We then proceed to an initial session, following which all parties can decide whether to work together longer. I typically work open-ended and weekly, though I can also build in reviews at periodic blocks such as eight or twelve weeks.

I am a relational and integrative psychotherapeutic counsellor. Through an empathic and analytical approach, I can help you to deal with life’s difficulties, to come to new realisations, and to arrive at new ways of being and relating. I am specialised in relational counselling and have experience across different therapeutic settings (NHS Talking Therapies, Relate, Thrive Together Psychotherapy, Cassel Associates). I work with people one-to-one and as couples and families (18+).
I offer therapy sessions in SE1/online on Thursday afternoons/evenings, SE15/online on Friday mornings/afternoons and Sunday afternoons/evenings, plus some other ad hoc availabilities.
About me and my therapy practice
Relational therapy
Relational counselling enables hard topics to be discussed in a soft and sensitive way, with our conversations setting a standard for what can hopefully be sustained longer term. Relational therapy can be akin to joint therapy, building on the intimacy of a relationship by further sharing inner lives and biographies in the presence of one another. By doing so, people in partnership continue to learn about themselves and each other in symbiosis. Through effort, care, consideration, and insight from all parties, our work can lead to new becomings.
Working one-to-one
I also work with people one-to-one, providing a supportive and stimulating environment. I want to hear where you are coming from, and to tune into the deeper dynamics and concerns that may be underlying relational issues and emotional states you are experiencing. I attend to each person's unique experience of the world, including anxieties, frustrations, senses of loss, isolation, being misunderstood, unhappiness, or searching for something more. I have helped people facing various challenges from inner states to family conflict to social identity to life transitions and changes.
Integrative modality and anthropology
My therapeutic modality is integrative, primarily between humanistic and psychodynamic orientations. I will try to facilitate your growth through empathy and curiosity, coupled with theoretically-informed provocations to unearth unconscious dynamics at play.
Further to my counselling qualifications (Diploma in Relational Counselling, Certificate in Counselling Skills), I have been a university lecturer since 2016 and hold a BA (Oxon) (First), MA, and PhD in the field of anthropology. As the study of human existence, my ongoing anthropological research and teaching deeply inform my therapeutic practice. I am attentive to how people’s lives are shaped by family, culture, psychology, and society, and to the difficulties that people face in love, work, life, and death.
Practice description
Relational therapy
In some instances, our work will focus on a particular issue that seems difficult to overcome. This could be a traumatic episode, such as infidelity, a bereavement, a grievance, or a loss of identity. It could be a persistent dynamic like discrepant sexual desires, patterns of conflict, attitudes towards parenting, or social and cultural life, including friendships and in-laws. In other instances, there may be a more general or mysterious unhappiness, such as a treasured connection fading in its spark.
Relational therapy typically works on communication, establishing constructive forms of sharing and active listening. Accordingly, I will guide you towards greater knowledge, empathy, and respect for each other, including sensitivity to each other's needs, biographies, and existential concerns. The aim is to empower all parties with greater clarity about who you are, individually and collectively, and where you are going in life.
Working one-to-one
Issues I can help with include:
Anxiety, depression, and self-esteem issues
Relationship difficulties and communication struggles
Workplace fulfilment and career aspirations
Family expectations and pressures
Pursuits of meaning, purpose, and transcendence
Existential boredom and a search for something more
Questions of gender, sexuality, race, ethnicity, migration, identity and belonging
Intergenerational relationships and responsibilities
Ageing, loss, and life transitions
My therapeutic practice is informed by ongoing clinical supervision across the month. I am a registered member of the ±«ÓãÊÓƵand I abide by their ethical framework. I draw variously on my parallel work at the Centre for Anthropology and Mental Health Research in Action and as a Departmental Tutor at the University of Oxford, where I teach the courses: ‘What makes life meaningful? Perspectives from anthropology' and ‘Therapy as anthropology: engagements with the human condition’: https://www.anthro.ox.ac.uk/people/dr-john-loewenthal
