About me and my therapy practice
If you are in the Colchester area and are dealing with significant challenges, I can help you to gain clarity and ease the feelings that are causing you so much discomfort.
I’m Paul, a Psychodynamic therapist operating in Private Practice from centres in Chelmsford City Centre. I have helped many people through the toughest times in their lives.
If you are looking for a therapist, it is vitally important that you are comfortable with them, so I offer a 15-minute telephone call to anyone who enquires. Completely free and without any obligation whatsoever.
Perhaps anxiety is taking over your life? Maybe your sleep is disturbed by overthinking, or you want to beat the low self-esteem that has been plaguing you.
Maybe you are a young adult who is trying to make sense of the world and the pressures that it brings. Neurodivergent and struggling with the complicated nuances of relationships with other people?
Bereavement? Trauma? PTSD? Abused?
Whatever it is that you are dealing with, I can assist you to find yourself in all of it. Psychodynamic Therapy is a powerful, yet subtle approach to understanding yourself and others. Ever felt as if you aren’t in the moment, or that you are outside of yourself watching? The mind does all sorts of things to protect itself from everyday stresses and anxieties. By reaching deep inside and shining a light on the unconscious processes that we all have, we can understand much more about why we are as we are today and how we interact with others.
Psychodynamic therapy is a talking therapy where the client and the therapist work together to understand what is going on. The therapist supports you in your curiosity and assists you to interpret what is happening.
I offer you a space that is discrete, comfortable and safe. Here you can say whatever you wish without fear of causing upset or being misunderstood. I do not judge, and I do not tell you what to do. With my assistance, you will find your own way. You will be heard and treated with respect.
Practice description
Why me?
I am passionate about my work with clients. This allows me to contain you and the things you are dealing with. I spent most of my working life in the military and emergency services so I can assure you that I will not be shocked or upset by anything you tell me.
Psychodynamic Therapy does not rely on toolkits, homework or printouts to assist you. It is a deep therapy that seeks to understand the real you and your place in life. It is a therapy that can have long lasting benefits for people with even the most complex issues. In my experience with the military and first responders, I have found that Psychodynamic therapy has helped them when other methods have only given short term relief.
I work with adult clients from all backgrounds, and I also specialise in assisting the military, veterans and the emergency services. If you are from one of those groups, you will find I speak your language and have a keen insight for the nuances of those careers.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and am continuing my own training by studying a professional doctorate in Psychodynamic Counselling, alongside my practice.
My style is professional, empathetic, but direct. If something needs to be said, it will be said. Occasionally a little humour even creeps in.
I keep up to date with Continued Professional Development and have a thirst for learning more about this profession that helps so many people.
Call or message me today to begin.
My first session
Before our first proper session, we can have a free 15 minute telephone call so that I can understand a little about you and we can see how we get along. We can cover any needs or questions that you might have about therapy.
The first session is an assessment to understand what it is that you are wanting to work on and to ensure that we are a good fit.
We will cover some medical history, family structure, experiences, and the reason you have come to therapy. We will look at what you may be wanting from therapy and whether I am best placed to assist you.
We will discuss the boundaries of our work. This is known as 'The Frame'. I have an information sheet that you will be given when we agree to start and that lays out how we will work together.
I will work hard to put you at ease and gain your trust.

I’m Paul, a Psychodynamic therapist operating in Private Practice from centres in Chelmsford City Centre. I have a career background in the Military and have been on operational deployments. I offer a 15-minute telephone call to anyone who enquires. Completely free and without any obligation whatsoever.
I can assist you with making sense of why you are feeling as you do and assisting you in processing the thoughts and feelings. By bringing clarity into situation and enabling you to understand your place in things.
