About me and my therapy practice

My name is Seán and I am a fully qualified Senior Registered Counsellor /Psychotherapist with the ±«ÓãÊÓƵ(MBACP). I gained my Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of East London.

My Masters was informed by research into what works in psychotherapy to respond to the needs and preferences of individual clients, using an integrative approach (Psychodynamic, Person Centred, Existential & Cognitive Behavioural Therapies)

My dissertation was published in the Counselling and Psychotherapy Research (CPR) Journal: https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/capr.12881

My experience includes over 18 years of delivering support services within the social, health, community, and voluntary sector, and I currently work as a Lecturer on Counselling and Psychotherapy programmes within a University, and as a Secondary School Counsellor.

My counselling work includes working with adults and adolescents experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, self-harm, suicidal thoughts and who are struggling with relationships to themselves & others and finding their place/meaning in the world.

I have experience of working with a range of diverse clients and issues via my work with MIND, The Claremont Project, HQ Therapy, and the Everyman Project. I also worked as a Place2Be Counsellor in schools, and I have been a Childline counsellor with the NSPCC, a bereavement Counsellor with Cruse & Islington Bereavement Service, and an elder befriender with LIC.

I also have extensive experience of working with Social Services & NHS providers and working with diverse groups, including:

– Individuals (and their families/ carers) living with trauma and neurological conditions

– Families/couples experiencing domestic abuse

– Parents in the early stages of pregnancy and/or with newborn children

– Young people and families engaged in the criminal justice system

– Young people with special educational needs

– Group and 1-1 work with teenagers in secondary and primary schools

Practice description

"Forces in conflict within the individual generate the individuals thought, emotion, and behaviour...(and) these conflicting forces exist at varying levels of awareness, indeed some are entirely unconscious" Irvin Yalom

I strive to provide a non-judgemental and safe counselling space and my approach is warm, empathetic and utilises different ways of working relative to each client.

This may involve healthily challenging clients to explore aspects of themselves and their lives that can be difficult to look at, but which may be holding them back.

I have a strong belief in empowering clients to bring aspects of themselves and their behaviours into awareness with a view to seeing how these are or aren’t serving them and by examining their choices in relation to these.

I have a natural inclination towards working with people in a person-centred way and helping them to explore issues and giving space to exam and reflect on their emotional regulation, supporting behaviour change and helping them closer towards self-identified goals.

I believe that the relationship is key and I work with the client from where they are, helping them to explore feelings, identify patterns and uncover what’s behind them.

I have a desire to support people through a range of life development stages, and to help them manage and navigate a range of personal growth and mental health issues with the ultimate task being "to identify and remove obstacles blocking the path to growth and self actualisation".

My first session

I offer a free initial 20 minute phone conversation to discuss the issues you wish to explore, explain how I work and to answer any questions you may have.

The first few sessions of therapy would offer us an opportunity to contract/explore how we might work together, and a review will occur by the 3rd session to ensure we are clear on the work and it's meeting your needs.

One of our first sessions would also involve gathering some background information and doing a deeper assessment of what you wish to explore in therapy.

About me and my therapy practice

My name is Seán and I am a fully qualified Senior Registered Counsellor /Psychotherapist with the ±«ÓãÊÓƵ(MBACP). I gained my Masters in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of East London.

I am completing a Diploma in Supervision with the Psychosynthesis Trust, a training which brings together transpersonal, humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives where there is always an interplay between supervision and the client-therapist relationship.

Practice description

My approach to clinical supervision is integrative, relational and reflective, grounded in contemporary transpersonal, humanistic and psychodynamic perspectives. I view supervision as a collaborative professional relationship that supports ethical practice, clinical effectiveness and the ongoing development of the therapist.

Having trained in Integrative Transpersonal Clinical Supervision through the Psychosynthesis Trust, my work is informed by the understanding that supervision is never solely about the therapist or the client in isolation.

In our work together, you can expect a supportive yet appropriately challenging environment where curiosity, reflection and professional growth are encouraged. I aim to help supervisees deepen their awareness of therapeutic process, develop confidence in their clinical judgement, and explore both conscious and unconscious dynamics emerging in the work.

I place significant value on the personhood of the therapist and recognise that our personal experiences, identities, values and lived histories inevitably influence our clinical work. My supervisory style combines warmth, authenticity and containment with a commitment to ethical and professional standards. Alongside case discussion, we may explore the emotional, relational and embodied aspects of your work, attending not only to what is happening in the therapy room but also to what emerges between us in supervision. I believe that thoughtful supervision should nurture both the practitioner and the practice.

Whether you are newly qualified or an experienced practitioner, my aim is to support you in developing greater insight, resilience and confidence, while maintaining the wellbeing of both therapist and client. Supervision with me is intended to be a collaborative learning partnership where professional competence, personal growth and reflective practice can flourish together.

My first session

I offer a free 20-minute introductory telephone conversation before we begin working together. This provides an opportunity for us to discuss your supervision needs, explore what you are looking for from supervision at this stage of your professional development, and consider whether I am the right supervisor for you. It is also a chance for you to ask any questions about my approach, availability, fees, or the practicalities of working together.

The first supervision session is focused on getting to know you as a practitioner and establishing a strong foundation for our work together, so we will spend time exploring your professional background, training, theoretical orientation, current client work, and any specific developmental goals or challenges you would like support with.

An important part of our initial work involves creating a supervision agreement. This will include discussing the purpose of supervision, confidentiality and its limits, record keeping, ethical responsibilities, safeguarding, professional requirements, and how we will review our work together. We will also consider what helps you feel supported, challenged and able to learn most effectively within the supervisory relationship.

During the first few sessions, we will explore your expectations of supervision and identify any particular areas of focus. We will formally review our work by the third session to ensure that supervision is meeting your needs and expectations. This review provides an opportunity to reflect on what is working well, identify any adjustments that may be helpful, and confirm shared goals for our ongoing work together. I view supervision as a collaborative partnership, and regular review helps ensure that the process remains relevant, effective and responsive to your development as a practitioner.
