About me and my therapy practice

Hi I'm Joanne (Jo)

I'm an experienced counsellor based in Kent, working with adult clients with a range of issues including anxiety, stress, work related issues, trauma and bereavement. I have a special interest in working with relationship issues and neurodiversity.

Are you starting to realise that you’ve always felt a little different or like you don’t quite fit in? Maybe you’ve recently been diagnosed with ADHD, or perimenopause has left you feeling like a stranger to yourself. You might feel lost, disconnected, or unsure of who you are now.

Perhaps it’s hard to get out of bed some mornings. Life may feel like a constant treadmill—with little joy—and even though you’re surrounded by people, you still feel lonely or unseen.

Counselling can help you make sense of these feelings. It offers a space to manage stress and anxiety, reconnect with yourself and those around you, and gain a deeper understanding of what makes you uniquely you—so you can start living life in a way that feels more true to who you are.

Thank you for reading this far. I know how hard it can be to reach out, especially to someone you don’t know. If you’re considering counselling, you may feel nervous or unsure about what to say. That’s completely okay. I’ve been there too—and I remember how vulnerable it felt. I’ll meet you where you are, gently and at your pace, to explore what’s brought you here and what you need right now.

I also understand how busy and overwhelming life can be. The good news is, counselling doesn’t have to take up a lot of your time. Sessions are just 50 minutes a week, and I offer flexible online appointments via Zoom or telephone, so you can talk from the comfort of your own home—no travel time needed. In-person sessions are also available, with free parking if that's your preference.

Practice description

Counselling can be a deeply transformative experience—offering fresh perspectives on yourself, your relationships, and life as a whole.

With a gentle and calm approach, I’ll support you in understanding the roots of your stress and anxiety, helping you uncover what’s beneath the surface. Together, we’ll explore strategies to cope and begin making choices that feel true to who you are.

I know opening up can feel daunting, especially if it's new, but this is a space where you’ll never be judged or dismissed. As we work together, you can reconnect with your strengths, grow in self-awareness and self-compassion, and begin to value yourself more fully.

I’ll also help you set healthy boundaries and manage others’ expectations so you can focus more on what truly matters to you.

My own path to becoming a counsellor—alongside discovering my neurodiversity (ADHD)—has given me a deep appreciation for how challenging and rewarding change can be, especially for those who feel a bit different or haven’t quite found their tribe.

Many clients have shared how alone they felt with their struggles until they found a space where they could speak freely and feel truly heard. I’m here to walk alongside you as you make meaningful, empowering changes. If this resonates with you, I’d love to hear from you.

My first session

Once you get in touch, I’ll arrange a time for your first session at a pace that feels right for you. In this initial session, we’ll gently explore what’s bringing you to counselling, what you’re hoping to gain, and any questions you might have about how it all works. It’s a chance for you to get a feel for how I work and whether it feels like a good fit for you.

If you decide to continue after our first session, we can agree on a regular time for sessions—typically weekly to begin with—or work more flexibly, depending on what suits you best. Many clients find that weekly sessions give them a strong foundation, and later move to fortnightly as they begin to feel more confident and empowered in their day-to-day lives.

There’s absolutely no pressure to continue if it doesn’t feel right. Sometimes people realise they’re not quite ready—or that counselling isn’t for them right now—and that’s completely okay. For therapy to be helpful, it’s important that you feel ready and open to the process, and I’ll support you with warmth and understanding wherever you are on that journey.

Practice description

* Counselling can be a transformative experience, offering new perspectives on yourself, your relationships, work, and life as a whole.

* With my gentle, calm approach, I will support you in understanding what's causing your stress and anxiety, including any underlying reasons.

* Together, we can explore coping strategies and help you begin making choices that align with who you truly want to be.

* Talking about your feelings can feel daunting—especially if it’s unfamiliar—but please know I will never judge or dismiss anything you share.

* Through our work together, you can build confidence and reconnect with your own skills, expertise, and life experience.

* As your self-awareness and self-compassion grow, you'll learn to value yourself more deeply.

* I’ll also support you in setting healthy boundaries and managing others’ expectations, so you have more time and energy for your passions, relationships, and personal fulfilment.

* I haven’t always been a counsellor, so I understand first-hand how challenging (and rewarding) making both big and small life changes can be.

* My own journey of retraining led me to discover my neurodiversity—ADHD—which has deepened my passion for supporting people who feel a bit quirky or haven’t quite found their tribe.

* Many of my clients have shared that they felt alone with their struggles and didn’t want to burden friends or family. In our sessions, they found a space to unburden, feel heard, and begin to feel lighter and less alone.

* I’m here to listen, support, and walk alongside you as you choose the changes that will help you feel more empowered and fulfilled.

* If what I’ve shared resonates with you, I would love to hear from you. Together, we can explore the tools, strategies, and shifts that will help you move forward.

About me and my therapy practice

About Me as a Supervisor

I am a counsellor with a small private practice working with private clients and EAP clients. I work with adult clients age 18+.My core modality is Person-Centred, but I am also experienced in Solution Focused Brief Therapy work. I am a big reader and love CPD and integrate my continued learning into my practice.

Currently my work is mostly online or over the telephone, but I offer and have experience of working face to face with clients in my private practice, during my placement with Mid Kent Mind, and as a volunteer counsellor with another low-cost local counselling project.

Through my EAP work, I have worked with a wide variety of client issues including anxiety, bereavement, depression, trauma and relationships but my areas of special interest are relationships, and work-related issues which at surface level may present as work-life balance, anxiety or stress but can often involve deeper issues such as self-confidence, conditions of worth, patterns of relating, neurodiversity and perimenopause/menopause.

I am passionate about supporting my counselling clients through their journeys of self-discovery, self-care and change and have appreciated the value of good, supportive and encouraging supervision alongside my work. This is what I hope to offer you.

I have been blessed with supervisors who I felt have seen me as a whole person, not just as a counselling supervisee.
