About me and my therapy practice
My ideal client is one of complexity: someone whose experiences cannot be understood through a single label or a standardised approach. I frequently work with trauma and PTSD, neurodiversity, psychosis, dissociation, bereavement, serious illness, self-harm and deeply rooted emotional or relational patterns. Many people come to me after previous therapy has helped only partly, or after feeling that one part of their experience was recognised while the whole person was missed.
More than 7,500 direct client hours, involving approximately 350 clients, underpin my practice. My experience includes private therapy and commissioned work across local authorities, schools and emergency services. I hold a BSc (Hons) in Psychology with Counselling, a Foundation Degree in Counselling and a Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling. My interest in psychology began in 2009 and has continued through formal education, clinical practice and ongoing professional development.
My own life has included serious illness, profound trauma and the challenge of rebuilding. When I sought treatment myself, I struggled to find a therapist who could understand the whole complex picture rather than treating each part separately. That experience ultimately led me towards becoming the kind of therapist I had once needed. I do not assume that my experiences are the same as yours, but they have taught me not to retreat from difficult material and to recognise how much courage genuine change can require.
As an experienced male therapist, I also offer an option that remains relatively uncommon within the profession, particularly for clients who would feel more comfortable speaking with a man.
Practice description
I work integratively, which means I do not force every client into a single therapeutic model. My work is grounded principally in person-centred and humanistic practice, informed by psychodynamic and systemic thinking, and supported by practical trauma-focused methods and selected NLP-based techniques where appropriate.
My style is warm, direct and actively engaged. I listen carefully, but I do not simply sit back or expect you to make sense of everything alone. Together we identify important patterns, understand why they developed, consider what continues to maintain them and work towards meaningful change. Complexity does not mean making therapy unnecessarily complicated; it means having sufficient breadth to recognise the connections between trauma, health, neurodiversity, relationships, identity and behaviour.
Therapy is shaped around the individual. Some clients require focused, short-term work, while others benefit from a longer and deeper process. I work with adults and young people, as well as couples and families where appropriate. Sessions are available in person from my private practice in central Taunton, and online or by telephone.
My first session
Before booking, you are welcome to contact me for a brief, no-obligation conversation. The first session gives us the opportunity to understand what has brought you to therapy, what you have already tried and what you would like to change. There is no expectation that you must disclose everything immediately or commit to continuing.
I will ask questions, listen carefully and offer initial observations where they may be helpful. We can begin to organise what may currently feel complicated or overwhelming and agree on a direction for the work. I will also explain how I practise and answer any questions you may have. By the end of the session, we can decide honestly whether I am the right therapist for you and, if so, what the next stage should look like.
