About me and my therapy practice

I am a qualified Therapeutic Counsellor with a Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling and an EMDR Therapist. I have worked for three years with a counselling charity supporting people who have experienced sexual trauma. Before becoming a counsellor, I worked as a qualified social worker for 38 years, gaining extensive experience supporting survivors of domestic and sexual abuse, as well as people experiencing a range of serious and enduring mental health difficulties. Since becoming a counsellor, I have continued to work with people who have diagnoses of serious mental health problems.

Whatever difficulty you are experiencing, I am happy to meet with you and explore together how we might work to make things better. Perhaps you need help with choices or decisions, or perhaps you want the opportunity to reflect more deeply on things you have experienced. Whatever brings you to counselling, we can work together to understand what is happening and consider what might help.

My main approach is Person-Centred Counselling, which emphasises collaboration, respect and working together as equals towards the goals that are important to you. Alongside this, I draw on a range of therapeutic approaches and ideas, including Internal Family Systems (IFS), EMDR and the Three-Phase Trauma Model. I use these approaches flexibly, depending on your needs and what feels most helpful to you.

I am also a practitioner of the Flash Technique (Flash EMDR), an approach that can help people process distress associated with traumatic memories.

My use of Internal Family Systems ideas can complement this work by helping us become curious about the different parts of ourselves that may have developed in response to our experiences. Rather than seeing these parts as problems to be removed, we can explore what they are trying to do for us and develop a greater understanding and compassion towards ourselves.

Practice description

I was trained and supervised in EMDR and The Flash Technique.  These techniques can swiftly ease and heal trauma symptoms and anxiety symptoms.  They are also effective with chronic pain, even phantom limb pain.   I trained in the Three Phase Trauma Model by a counselling charity who work with those who've experienced sexual trauma. I am also trained in Person Centred Counselling and I have private supervision every 2 weeks to make sure my as beneficial to you as possible. As a ±«ÓãÊÓƵmember I subscribe to the ±«ÓãÊÓƵEthical Framework available to view on the ±«ÓãÊÓƵwebsite.

Depending on your needs we may agree some goals for the counselling and agree a frequency to review those goals. If we work in this way, my role is to keep the counselling on track to make the time spent as efficient as possible to achieve your goals.

EMDR and The Flash Technique are used in these sessions and can speed progress.

When the counselling is reviewed, it is a chance to steer the way we work to become more goal oriented or to broaden the scope of the counselling in whatever way you wish provided we can be sure it would be safe and therapeutic.

About me and my therapy practice

No matter what your difficulty is, I am happy to meet with you and work out how we can work together to make things better. If you want help to improve making choices or decisions, or if you want to reflect deeply on things that you have experienced, I will work with you.

I know that insight and warmth alone are not sufficient, especially when working with developmental and relational trauma. So, my therapeutic toolkit has expanded: I will help you build relationships with conflicted parts of you.  I will help you become more embodied and find unresolved memories which can be processed.

Practice description

I am trained and supervised in the Three Phase Trauma Model by a counselling charity who work with those who've experienced sexual trauma.

I am a qualified EMDR Therapist and a practitioner of the Flash Technique or Flash EMDR.  These techniques can unlock trauma memories and allow them to be processed.  This can give quick relief from night terrors, panic attacks and flashbacks.

I also work with parts that are known as wounded exiles, managers and fire-fighters.  Sometimes the Flash Tecnique is not enough and you will need skills to identify, communicate with and form attachments to alienated, fragmented parts of you.

Depending on your needs we may agree some goals for the counselling and agree a frequency to review those goals.  If we work in this way, my role is to keep the counselling on track to make the time spent as efficient as possible to achieve your goals.

If you are working on trauma and need to manage trauma symptoms, we may work in a quite structured way to learn "bottom up -top down" anxiety management techniques and the science which supports these techniques.  Once these techniques begin to work, usually about 5-6 weeks, we can look at identifying and  improving your tolerance to triggers.  Once this is achieved, and if you want to continue, we can look at your history and attachments and consider more deeply where you trauma may reach back in your history.  Most of the people I have seen improve their daily experience of better managed symptoms in about 20 weeks of regular sessions.  This work is also supported by the Flash Technique which can speed progress.
