About me and my therapy practice
Hi, my name is Morag and I thoroughly enjoy supporting individuals and groups through challenging periods. I have been in a supportive role for many years, my passion is for people. My main area of therapy Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) which focuses on current difficulties with a view to changing the ‘here and now’ rather than spending lots of time looking to the past for causes of distress. I also use Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) which reviews our Affect Regulation Systems, our internal critic and helps develop self-compassion. A also use Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) which is a powerful scientifically proven psychotherapy to help clients recover from traumatic events in their lives which have led to poor mental health.
Sessions are dependent on client needs and can be short or long term. Sessions are 50 minute duration normally, they can be longer for trauma work. You as the client are expected to take a more active role in therapy by applying the new skills and techniques learned to help make changes to thoughts, feelings and behaviours. CBT, CFT and EMDR have been evidenced to support with a variety of problems such as depression, anxiety, phobias, stress, panic disorder, personality disorders, OCD, PTSD and addiction. However, these types of therapy may not suit everyone as there is a need for clients to apply the techniques offered and undertake some work themselves.
If CBT/CFT/EMDR is not for you, I can also support using multiple modalities for mixed durations so please contact me for an initial discussion to find out how I can best support. I happily work with neurodiverse clients.
Practice description
I work online and in person in Aberdeen. I really enjoy the collaborative approach that CBT/CFT/EMDR offers so I will find a time to suit us either during the day or evenings.
I also facilitate groups with professional colleagues, again online or in person.
My first session
I usually offer a free 15 minute telephone consult to check we are the right fit for each other. Then prior to our first session I will email you an info leaflet, personal details form and our counselling agreement. We will use the first few minutes to review both documents and check your understanding of my ethical practices.
We the discuss your presenting problem in your words, taking time for you to share what you feel is relevant. As part of this, I will ask some further questions to help assess your needs and ensure we are best aligned to work together. There is also the opportunity for you to ask questions throughout.
I also invite you to go through the Core-OM form which is a measurement tool I find very useful to guide our future sessions. Often my clients like seeing their progress too.
We will end our first session with an idea of what your therapy goals are so we can focus our time together going forward.
