About me and my therapy practice

Are you feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or weighed down by difficult emotions? Perhaps you're looking for a space where you can be truly heard, acknowledged, and understood. I offer counselling and psychotherapy to individuals in Torbay, Exeter, and surrounding areas, as well as online. With over 25 years of experience, I provide a warm, supportive, and professional approach to help you explore whatever you’re facing.

As an integrative counsellor, I draw from a range of therapeutic approaches, tailoring the work to suit your unique needs. This flexibility allows us to find the most helpful way forward for you, whether you're dealing with anxiety, low self-esteem, relationship issues, trauma, or simply a sense that something isn’t right.

Together, we’ll build a trusting relationship where you can explore patterns of thinking, feeling, and relating that may no longer serve you. In a safe and non-judgemental space, you’ll have the time you need to get to know yourself more deeply, and to move toward the changes and life you want.

If you're considering counselling, I’d be pleased to offer an initial consultation to see whether working together feels right for you. You’re very welcome to contact me by phone or email with any questions. Therapy can be a powerful step toward a more connected, grounded, and fulfilling life.

Practice description

I have worked as a qualified psychotherapist for over 25 years, though my experience in the field began even earlier, in 1987, when I volunteered as a counsellor with the Samaritans in Greater Manchester. During those formative years, I supported people facing crisis, trauma, abuse, addiction, and relational distress, laying the foundation for the work I continue today.

My qualifications include a BSc (Hons), a Diploma in Advanced Counselling, a Diploma in Clinical Supervision, a Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), and certification as an EMDR Practitioner. I am also a Master Practitioner of Neuro-Linguistic Programming and undertook four years of training in Transactional Analysis Psychotherapy after completing my studies at the Iron Mill Institute in Exeter.

Currently, I maintain a private practice where I work with around fifteen clients per week. I support individuals with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including stress, anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I have extensive experience in relationship counselling and in working with survivors of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse.

I receive referrals from local GPs and Torbay Council and am currently contracted as a psychotherapist to both the NHS and Torbay Social Services. My work with the Child Protection Department includes counselling offending adults and supporting individuals with complex trauma.

In previous roles, I have provided counselling for the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary as part of their employee assistance programme, and I was contracted for 15 years to support individuals in the NHS High Intensity Psychosocial Services recovering from alcohol and substance misuse.

Alongside clinical practice, I have taught and co-facilitated the BACP-accredited Diploma-level Counselling Course at the Iron Mill Institute near Truro, Cornwall, and have delivered mental health training in corporate settings.

My first session

Taking the first step into counselling can feel daunting, but it’s also a brave and important move toward understanding yourself and finding relief from whatever you may be carrying. Our first session is an opportunity for us to meet, talk about what has brought you to therapy, and begin to explore what you hope to gain from the process.

You don’t need to prepare anything in particular or worry about saying the "right" things. This is a space where you can be yourself, without pressure or judgment. I’ll ask some gentle questions to help us get to know each other and to understand what support might be most helpful for you. You are welcome to share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.

The session also gives you the chance to get a feel for how I work and to see whether the way we relate feels right for you. A strong, trusting relationship is central to effective therapy, so this time is as much about your experience as it is about any specific goals.

Above all, you can expect the session to be respectful, confidential, and supportive. We go at your pace, and there’s no expectation to commit beyond what feels manageable for you
