About me and my therapy practice
With over 5000 hours of experience as an expert therapist and a background as an elite international athlete, I specialise in helping professionals who are driven, capable but often struggling beneath the surface. Enquire now for a free 20-minute consultation.
The parts of you that once protected you and helped you succeed, may now be sabotaging the very life you’ve created. The self-reliance you’ve relied on, may have become a lonely burden to carry. You’re likely afraid of trying something new because what’s familiar feels safe: even if it’s not working.
My job is to help you lean into this discomfort, into the unknown and discover mastery in areas of your life you’ve neglected. Together, we can unpack the difficulty, reveal how it came about, and discover how you can take action, so you can feel confident in your resiliency and contented in who you are.
Many of the people I work with are coming to therapy for the first time, often feeling both apprehensive and exhausted. By prioritising their career and ambitions, they’ve kept their difficulties at bay but, the hiding and secrecy is starting to falter as their coping is finding its limits. They want help, but a type of help that meet’s them at their level.
My clients include barristers, doctors, academics, executives, entrepreneurs, and driven professionals in many sectors navigating, complex emotional territory, relationship conflict, substance abuse, trauma and much more. I bring deep expertise, lived understanding, and a style that’s calm, grounded, and real.
Practice description
Here’s what I bring to working together:
- Over 5000 hours of therapy delivery: across the NHS, charities and private settings.
- Award winning therapist: I received the Big Life Creative award amongst a pool of 600 staff in the northwest for my work in the NHS.
- Specialist experience with trauma and grief: I helped pioneer a fathers-only therapy approach for fathers who have lost children.
- An elite sport background: I was a Team GB international and medal winning athlete who navigated a psychological rebuild after a career ending car accident.
- Lived experience: I overcame of PTSD, panic and childhood trauma through therapy and meditation which came shortly after my car accident.
- 6 years of professional training: I’ve undergone extensive professional training in person-centred counselling, psychotherapy and mindfulness.
- Academically active: I conduct research in the field of counselling and psychotherapy on men’s grief and emotional resilience, which helps keeps me sharp.
My first session
What my clients say they admire most is my balance of relatability and skillset. I’m able to authentically connect with you in a very personable way yet, it’s my skill as a therapist which puts you at ease, helping you feel confident to face your difficulty even after one session.
Here’s what some of my clients say about working with me:
"James has been an invaluable asset to me as a barrister navigating emotionally charged cases... His insight and guidance have helped me untangle my thoughts, making the challenges of life and work more manageableâ€
– Michael, 2024. Barrister
"I have worked with James for almost a year, and he has been a key part of my progress in overcoming past trauma... I have seen a huge improvement in my overall well-being."
