About me and my therapy practice
In our 1st session I will carry out a initial assessment-to get a clearer picture of what is going on for you at that point. This will help us understand what you are experiencing and think about the type of approach that would be most supportive for you
I will then discuss if I feel a particular type of therapy would be appropriate for you. I am a Integrative Therapist means I am trained in the 4 types of therapy and I also have my background degree in Psychology.
I work from a person centred foundation, this means it is important that I create a safe, empathetic and a non-judgemental space in order for you to be able to explore your thoughts and feelings at your own pace. From this base I may also draw on other approaches that may benefit you.
Psychodynamic/psychotherapy, CBT, Mindfulness and Existential Therapies.
I find it useful to use all elements from these different approaches with the work being grounded in a person centred relationship and we work at your pace. Any strategies from the other approaches are always offered in support of what I feel maybe helpful.
My 1st career as a Veterinary Nurse showed me the calming affect dogs and cats can have on people and I decided when I started my practice I would allow my pets who are all very gentle into the therapeutic space if the client wanted them in. Stroking them can help when talking for the first couple of sessions as it can be a bit nerve racking, especially if its your first time in therapy.
Practice description
My practice is a cosy warm room in a house with chairs that have soft throws and large soft cushions to sit on or hold.
I can include some therapy animals, I have 2 dogs and 4 cats and they will come into the therapy room if the client would feel comfortable with them (although I cannot guarantee the 4 cats!)
They are friendly, gentle and I often find they have a calming grounding effect and some clients find it really supportive during our sessions.
Their presence is totally optional as Is having only the dogs or only the cats. It is totally the clients choice and what will help them relax.
My first session
1st session, I would like to try and get a understanding of what is going on for you and why you feel you need therapy.
I carry out a assessment by way of me asking you some questions and you answering them if you want to and I will take notes only on this session.
You can meet the dogs and maybe 1 of the cats (if they appear) if you would like to.
I usually find the 1st session lasts 1.5-2 hours long. Not from me asking lots of questions but rather the client offering a lot of information.
