About me and my therapy practice
When you want to improve or save your relationship but don’t know what to do next.
Many years ago, I was struggling to make sense of my own marriage problems and needed help. I’ve been through the endless arguments, the silences, feeling lonely and the tension of nothing being resolved.
Counselling changed my life, but not only in the way you might think. It made me realise how much better helping couples could be. I retrained as a psychotherapist and relationship therapist and, for the past 15 years, my work has focused on helping couples.
Today, couples often come to me exhausted, frustrated and worried about what the future holds. They usually know what isn’t right and have tried hard to make things better. Yet something triggers a familiar reaction, their partner reacts, and very quickly they find themselves back in the same pattern.
The issue may change, but the negative dynamic between them remains the same.
The sad truth is that no one teaches us or equips us to be in a relationship. Somehow, we are expected to create change using the same understanding, knowledge and skills that got us stuck in the first place.
Yet how long you’ve struggled is no indication of the outcome. When both partners want their relationship to work and are willing to learn and invest in it, longstanding problems can become understood and resolved.
Practice description
My approach recognises that you come to couples therapy as two different people — and what each of you needs is rarely exactly the same.
I work with you together, using my psychotherapy training to understand what is happening for each of you and tailoring the work to what each of you needs, as well as what you need together.
My approach brings together the four areas every relationship needs: understanding, emotional connection, relationship knowledge and communication skills. We identify what each of you needs and use these areas to help you resolve the difficulties bringing you to therapy, build the relationship you want and protect it for the future.
Importantly, you’ll understand what you’re doing, why you’re doing it and how it will help. This means the work doesn’t stay in the therapy room. You can use what you learn between sessions and increasingly know what to do for yourselves.
I’m calm, friendly and easy to talk to, but I’m also actively involved in our work together. I’ll support, guide and, when needed, gently nudge you. You’ll never be judged for struggling or finding things difficult.
I also believe you should experience what it’s like working with me before deciding whether I’m the right therapist for you. If we meet and you decide not to continue, there’s nothing to pay.
I work with couples in Caterham and the surrounding areas, as well as online.
My first session
I believe therapy should help you begin making progress from the very first session. That's why each session lasts 75 minutes, giving us the time to understand what's happening and begin creating meaningful change.
Almost always couples leave with something new they can begin working with and practical guidance they can begin using straight away.
Between sessions, I provide summaries, exercises and articles to help you continue making progress and build on what we've achieved together.
